16 May, Lecture on Computerizing German banking in 1957-1991 by Dr. Martin Schmitt

HDSM is delighted to welcome Dr. Martin Schmitt to deliver the lecture ‘Between data, cash and checkbook money: Computerizing German banking, 1957-1991’. The event is organised in a hybrid format. To participate online please get registered via the Eventbrite.

The abstract of his talk is as follows:

Why did German banks adopt digital computers and software to conduct their retail banking operations in the second half of the 20th century? What interactions occurred between programs, computers, and banking operations? In this talk, I will investigate digitalization as one of the most profound transformations of the 20th century. To illustrate this transformation, I will focus on the East and West German Savings Banks, which provided financial services to more than half of the population. My argument is that software, algorithms, and data played a key role in a far-reaching change in the German economy.

Dr. Martin Schmitt is a Research Associate at the Institut for History in TU Darmstadt. His interests are in the field of history of technology and digital history in Germany.

The lecture will be conducted via Zoom Webinar and requires registration.

4:15 pm – 5:55 pm
