A new publication on History of virtual museums and web archives: Opportunities for rescaling research by Dr. Nadezhda Povroznik
“History of virtual museums and web archives: Opportunities for rescaling research” by Dr. Nadezhda Povroznik is featured in the ‘The Routledge Companion to Transnational Web Archive Studies’.
About the chapter:
The virtual museum is one context in which to examine the transformation of web-based information ecosystems. Nadezhda Povroznik’s chapter explores how the emergence of the web has reshaped museum practices. As museums have adapted to the digital age, their approaches to curating, selecting, communicating, and publishing materials online have evolved in tandem with shifting visions of their institutional roles and priorities. This chapter considers the phenomena of museums’ multiplatform digital presence, analysing case studies to trace the evolution of museum websites through close reading methods. Additionally, the chapter discusses the potential for scaling up research by incorporating mixed qualitative and quantitative methods.
Povroznik also emphasises the importance of born-digital cultural heritage and the need to ensure its sustainability. This is very much the topic of the next chapter about exploring skills and training requirements for the web archiving community. Helena Byrne, Juan-José Boté-Vericad, and Sharon Healy examine current trends in the challenges for library and archival roles in a digital context and then take a look at the challenges, and skills and training requirements for librarians and archivists who participate in web archiving as part of their role in a cultural heritage organisation. They further examine the landscape of training materials and courses organised by various organisations and institutions across Britain, Ireland, and Spain. Overall, the chapter finds that web archiving presents some unique challenges requiring additional skills for librarians and archivists because of the characteristics of the web and continual advances in technology. It further finds that a collaborative transdisciplinary approach is needed when it comes to designing new curricula for web archiving education and this should be representative of the multiple stakeholders who participate in the activities of the web archiving lifecycle.
