Museums use digital technologies widely to expand their societal and cultural impact. This is often told as a story of how museums evolved from initial experiments in the 1950s to a significant online presence today.
In the process of digital transformation, museums forged their digital identity, trying to expand their activities beyond the museums’ walls, to take on new roles in the digital era. The concept of museums’ digital identity is the focus of the paper. To articulate the concept, the theory of identity, the methodology of web history, the concept of virtual museum and museum branding are brought into consideration.

The speaker will discuss the concept of the museums’ digital identity and will outline a number of its components at the collective and individual levels embodied in the national strategies and policy documents of digital transformation, articulated in statements made by museums’ associations, revealed in features of their online presence, and embedded in their brand design. In the conclusion, the author raises questions about the driving force of museums in developing digital identity and about the need to analyse the multiplatform museum presence comprehensively.

Dr. Nadezhda Povroznik is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Institut für Geschichte, Technische Universität Darmstadt, with over 15 years of experience in the Digital Humanities field. She specializes in Digital History, Digital Heritage, and Virtual Museology. Her research delves into the peculiarities and challenges inherent in the digital history field.
