Digital Lunch: Exploring the potential of HDSM

The HDSM department’s inaugural lunch, hosted by Prof. Dr. Julianne Nyhan, proved to be an interesting event for attendees on the 22nd of June 2023. The lunch served as an opportunity to discuss the conceptualization and significance of HDSM as a body, along with its ongoing projects. In this blog post, we will delve into the key takeaways from the lunch and highlight why HDSM is an essential platform for advancing Digital Humanities.

During the lunch, Prof. Dr. Julianne Nyhan shed light on the origin and purpose of HDSM. Its primary intellectual objective is to investigate the role of digital methods in historical research. Practically this research can take many forms: for example, through the AHRC TANC-funded “The Sloane Lab: looking back to build future shared collections” HDSM collaborates with Cultural Heritage Institutions such as the British Museum and Natural History Museum, UK to uncover new knowledge about historical collections. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as semantic web and historical-interpretative analysis, HDSM aims to better understand narratives of formation, disruption, and change in the History of Computing in the Humanities. And, working closely with Dr Andrew Flinn, Reader in Archival Studies and Oral History, UCL and other international colleagues, HDSM undertakes research into “Multimodal Oral History“. We are also awaiting the outcome of various funding bids and hope to have announcements of new projects in due course.

The lunch also addressed the question of whom the HDSM department caters to and its importance as a body. It became evident that HDSM encompasses a wide range of interests within the Digital Humanities community. Through interdisciplinary collaborations at both the university and international levels, HDSM fosters a vibrant intellectual community united in the pursuit of knowledge. The lunch emphasized the aims of HDSM, which include promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, providing educational materials for students and interested individuals, and nurturing a new generation of scholars. Going forward, HDSM plans to organize regular events for students and professionals interested in Digital Humanities. Stay updated on future lunches by following our blog page.

Together, let us shape the future of Digital Humanities and unlock its full potential.
